ACTIVITY 1: COLLECTION OF SAMPLES

Existing networks and earlier established collaboration programmes with local communities will be utilized for realization of sample collection plan. Several fish species will be collected to assess contamination of Czech aquatic environment by perfluorinated compounds and its impact to human food chain. Fillets and livers will be taken. Two free living fish species, representing omnivores, chub and bream, and two farmed fish, carp and trout, will be collected to distinguish possible influence of feeding habits and living conditions on PFC levels. Fish samples will be collected in period March – May 2010. Sampling sites will be selected with respect to the evaluation of different contamination levels supposing areas with background levels, highly polluted areas close to expected sources of contamination (sampling sites located above and below these potential sources), at different parts part of individual rivers downstream and fish farming ponds.
For the assessment of contamination of the Czech food basked by PFC a range of food items will be analyzed, particularly focused on fish products. Meat products, eggs, vegetables, fruits samples to detect influence of possible environmental contamination, processing technology applied and packaging materials used will be also analyzed.
Target matrices:
1. Food items
- fish and seafood products imported and fish from local production will be obtained at retail market
- canned meat based products and vegetables / fruits products
2. Fish - free living and aquaculture species
Species:
- Chub (Leuciscus cephalus) - Vltava and Labe rivers
- Bream (Abramis brama) - Vltava and Labe rivers
- Carp (Cyprinus carpio) - fish farms
- Trout (Salmo trutta) - fish farms
Tissues: meat (filets) and livers
Sampling sites:
- 8 locations on Vltava river (Tyn n. Vlt, Praha/Klecany, Kralupy nad Vltavou) and Labe river (Debrne-Verdek, Valy, Lysa nad Labem, Obristvi, Decin)
- 3 locations on ponds (farmed fish) - Trebon, Pohorelice, Chlumec nad Cidlinou
- 3 locations on trout farms - Louny/Chomutov, Rychnov nad Kneznou, Domazlice
